There is no denying that our elected officials have saddled this community with an albatross known as MI-Connection. In fact, former board member and self-proclaimed "math man", Frank Rader, assured the community that MIC was a good purchase for our town. He was supported by Mac Herring and, I believe, Chris Carney on his quest to expand government into the world of private business and free economy. The tie was broken by the former mayor.
This purchase was made despite the significant number of public comments indicating the general public did not support this decision. We were told that the major reasons to purchase were expanded lineups, faster customer service response times, and all at a reasonable fee. MIC offers a "Triple Play", which is mistakenly says no other company offers. All other companies can and do offer bundled services which compete with MIC's version of the specially named bundled service.
To date, we know we've spent $92.5 million on keeping this business afloat. In order to do that, we have had to alter our town's working budget, meaning essential services will be negatively impacted. If Mooresville experiences anything like Davidson, then we can expect fewer officers on the street, fewer fire personnel, lowered salaries for those already underpaid folks, and a decreasae in response times to our needs for quality services.
Mr. Atkins suggests that to sell the MIC today would result in a loss of approximately $60 million, but goes on to say that we will be asked several times this year to take out additional loans to help defray the expenses/losses of MIC. This makes absolutely no sense.
So we'ere being told that we have to sit on MIC until 2017. So somene appears to have locked us into this ongoing loss for another 6 years - thanks a lot!
Miles Atkins indicates he will be as open/honest as possible about MIC and it financial position. I hope he follows through on this.
